Abstract
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" has always been one of my favorite musicals, and this affection is reflected in my scenic design for the production. The musical, set on a street in ancient Rome, follows the comic escapades of Pseudolus, a slave who schemes to gain his freedom by uniting his young master, Hero, with the beautiful Philia. The set includes the three iconic houses: the house of Senex, the brothel of Marcus Lycus, and the house of Erronius, all designed in a cartoon-like style to capture the farcical tone of the musical.
To add a touch of sophistication, I modeled the buildings based on Greco-Roman pottery painting, integrating classical elements to enhance the historical context. The house of Senex features Roman columns and ornate detailing, Lycus's brothel is adorned with intricate carvings, and Erronius's modest home incorporates ancient painting motifs. This blend of playful and classical elements creates a visually engaging environment that brings the ancient Roman setting to life, balancing humor with historical authenticity.
