In March 2019, the University of California, Irvine Department of Drama staged the California premiere of Parliament Square (March 9–17, 2019), written by James Fritz and directed by Jane Page. I designed the scenic environment for this urgent and emotionally charged production, which examined themes of protest, sacrifice, and personal conviction.

The design approach was intentionally restrained—an environment stripped back to essentials. Through the use of shadow, sharp angles, and spatial tension, the set supported the play’s moral and emotional stakes without distraction. The goal was to allow the actors and audience to fully inhabit the urgency of the moment, reinforcing the weight of the questions the play asks.

I’m proud to have collaborated with a creative team committed to telling this story with clarity and purpose. Bringing Parliament Square to life in UCI’s Experimental Media Performance Lab underscored how powerful simplicity can be when paired with thoughtful storytelling.
