Abstract

Arlene Hutton's 1998 Last Train to Nibroc is a story about a love that flourishes in a place where they least expect to find it. Set in the winter of 1940 on a train headed East, Raleigh and May meet as they are forced to share a seat on a crowded train. What starts as a mutual attraction becomes a bond that will change their worlds forever. This romantic comedy provides a glimpse of life in the 1950s and loves fragility in a time of war.

In a love story with two actors, creating a structure that allowed intimacy in the vastness of a proscenium was essential. We created a raked stage, with a smaller proscenium textured with Kentucky Barn wood texture used to create this intimacy. Behind the Structure, we had a 30' truck that seamlessly established the three locations in the play.
